A blurb about Chris on WSAZ

Winning Attitudes: Chris Spencer

One of the challenges for the "We are Marshall" crew has been recreating the moment the herd beat Xavier in 1971. However, that job has been made much easier from one eye witness account of the game.

His name is Chris Spencer and if you've been around local sporting events over the last 40 years, you've probably seen him....especially covering Marshall Football.

Chris Spencer

I rarely watch the sports segment of the news, but for some reason did tonight. I was shocked to learn that Chris Spencer died. He was a photographer with the Cabell Record when I worked there. He later went on to work for other media resources, most recently, HuntingtonNews.Net. I talked about Chris as recently as Saturday at the Putnam Farmers' Market with the photographer at Metro Putnam who'd worked with Chris at the Herald Dispatch. Chris taught me a lot about photography and I even won an award with the WV Press Assn. with a photo I'd taken. Chris developed it and helped me crop it. Chris was absolutely one of the greatest guys around, and although I didn't see him often, we exchanged Christmas cards and would occasionally bump into one another. I am really going to miss him.

Obesity and Taxation

The press is on for new taxation and regulation. This time the excuse is obesity. Politicians have learned that steps towards their utopian dreams can be achieved if they just build a good case of indignation.

The proposals put forth by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) include new zoning and building restrictions and taxing sugary drinks. Notwithstanding the fact that the proposed solution to the increase in obesity will not work, the press is on. It is getting to the point where any excuse will do when it comes to implementing what is currently unpopular legislation.

And if the people running the CDC and country think that limiting access to food is going to cure the obesity problem, we've got bigger problems than obesity to deal with.

Fortunately, here in West Virginia the population generally realizes that depression is the problem. Depression leads to inactivity, and inactivity leads to obesity. Depressed people often turn to eating to solace themselves, again contributing to weight gain.

So, why not start a campaign of encouragement to the discouraged here in our fair State? Shift your priorities a little, reach out and help others find the courage to challenge the day with an optimistic attitude. It might not make you rich in terms of dollars, but you might find yourself in good company, good spirits, and good health.

What more can a person ask for?

Here are the states ranked in order of the percentages of obesity in the US. Let's see if West Virginians can provide the Nation with a model of how to change this trend. :

RE: County Elections

Yesterday, I voted in Precinct 61. When I was finished I waited at the door for my husband. I noticed a poll worker lead two adult males to the machine where I'd just voted, and the younger man was looking over the older man's shoulder. I thought it was odd and kept staring and was about to ask the other workers what was going on. When my husband came to the door, I asked him what 2 men were doing at a machine, and he suggested the older man could not read...was blind, etc. If that is the case, isn't a poll worker supposed to assist? Finally, another poll worker asked (I think at seeing my concern), "Is that allowed?" A worker who was eating some cheetos got up and went to talk to the men, but we left, so I don't know what was going on. It just looked fishy to me.

Wish we'd gone there after the Putnam Farmers' Market. Instead, we went to the Mexican restaurant in Milton (where we could have a beer w/lunch). The waitress didn't understand my order and I got some bland combination w/refried beans and rice with bits of potato in it. When I complained that wasn't what I ordered, I realized there was a language barrier, so, as hungry as I was, I ate what I was presented. I get so darn frustrated with poor service and poor quality food in restaurants around here. But, hey, 2 Negro Modelos, and I'm fine.

I made Mexican cookies for the Putnam market today...one with a typical chocolate/chipotle blend. Thirty-six cookies...gone in no time. One of the vendors said they make a mean jalapeno fudge. People have no idea how good peppers and chocolate go together.

RE: Joe Manchin for President?

Yes, and I recall a young Democratic Presidential candidate who came to West Virginia and toured the coal camps and impoverished communities. My father picked me up and put me on his shoulders so I could get a glimpse of the man. I recall his words, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask rather what you can do for your country."

Later, he started programs to help the impoverished throughout the Appalachians.

A more recent candidate didn't even bother to show up, but he made a campaign promise to bankrupt coal fired power plants in Berkley. Then he was endorsed by the UMWA, and I'm still trying to figure out how Cecil managed to rationalize that.

The one didn't promise anything, asked people to sacrifice for the country, but he delivered millions from poverty. The second promised the moon and then put in place what amounts to a head tax in the form of insurance premiums.

WV historically has been Democrat in National politics, and now that it's 67% Romney and 33% Obama in WV polling, did the State turn against the Democrats or did the Democrats turn against the State? Sadly, this lifelong Democrat found the party had left me, and I'm sure Senator Manchin is feeling exactly the same way.

Joe Manchin for President?

While reading the National news, I cannot help but notice that Senator Manchin is at odds with the Democrat party quite often. His criticism of President Obama is probably making it pretty difficult in the halls of Congress right now. Even Governor Tomblin is supported by thirty four percent of the State's registered Republicans, and he is on record as saying that President Obama hasn't earned his vote.

The question then becomes whether Manchin could do a better job as President. Followed closely by whether the Senator could win if he ran.

RE: HNN message board died.

miltonwv, I noticed you have a chat room that isn't being used, and I'm guessing 'twitter' might very well have something to do with that. While it would be nice to have a lot of traffic, sometimes the more quiet boards do better.

There was a site in Israel that set up a 'newspaper' where everyone was welcome to register and post articles. The articles were rated by how many hits they received, and a new article was placed on about page two or three. The more hits, the further up the pages it went. After a certain amount of time, it was 'archived', sent to old news or some such.

Once on the front page, if it made it to the 'headline', the top article, it stayed for a certain period of time if it's rating stayed at number one, and then, it, too, was dropped to old news.

The 'blog', or whatever you wanted to call it, did well for a while. There were interesting articles from all over the World posted there. But in a short time, it changed into a garbage bin. I posted on article with a rather in-depth look at drugs and the effect on the culture, and I got like a few hundred thousand hits in the seventy two hours allotted. It was about as well written as I could manage, no bs in it, and quite a bit of research presented.

While it made it to the 'headline' news, it didn't gain the week's best, but it did have a pretty good run. Not like Fox or CNN news, but a quarter of million readers wasn't bad. That was the problem.

With over a quarter million readers, there were quite a number vying for the 'headline' position and titles to weekly, monthly, and yearly most hits. The stories got more and more outrageous, then dropped off the deep end into utter nonsense. Readership took a corresponding nose dive, and that was the end of the 'blog newspaper'. whatever.

The total run was less than two months, from some really good articles to total pile of excremeto de vaca. Yes, the site had some good word of e-mail correspondence when it first started, and the board developers did recruit from the various forums around, sending invites to some of the members to become posters even before the site went up. The attempt was to develop a real newspaper and credential the reporters, but it quickly descended into the garbage pit.

Long and short, be thankful the forum don't have too much notoriety. More is not always better.

Thanks for the compliment, Susan. I always tried to be somewhat rational and provide an honest perspective on things.

Swampfox, were you the one who wrote about the Minter kit homes in Huntington? I thought that was quite interesting, and, evidently very little has ever been written about them.

When I look at the logs from this site. I see a lot of bot infected and spyware ridden Windows machines visiting this website. Some of the spyware probes the websites for weaknesses.

There is an excellent program to defeat spyware and many Trojan worms.

The program is called "Spy-bot search and destroy". The best thing about this program is that it is quite useful and also very free. The download os being hosted on the same machine that hosts this website.

Nice t see you Swampy. Well behaved people are always welcome here.

THe only time we ever had a big blow up on this board is when the soccar moms got into a catfight a few years ago. People drift in and out and there are many who do not post a lot but read us on a regular basis.

Although our traffic is not what it used to be. Facebook has a lot to do with that.

RE: HNN message board died.

Back in the heyday of the HNN forum, I enjoyed posting there. For the last few years, it had been pretty difficult to have any kind of debate.

Truth be known, the forum was already in it's last throes of slow death before the server died. I had tried to maintain an interest in posting there, but there was nothing being posted to write home about, for sure, and my visits had dwindled down to a flurry of visits over a few days, then a few months of not even dropping by.

No, it was more like the bar in that 'Jose Wales' movie. Everything had ran out, the whiskey, the wine, and then the beer. The forum dwindled down to a few hangers on, die hards with set minds and no room for debate.

I honestly miss the old board, not as it has been in the past four or five years, but in it's heydays of the early 2000s. I was missing it long before it's final demise, for sure. Hey, that's sounding like the situation in Washington right now.

Oh, well. Enough of the requiem.

Life is still good.

You've run a pretty good board, milt. I notice people still stop by to read it, but don't post much anymore. It's politics as usual in Milton, but things will become more active as election time rolls around. I like your comment that the HNN board died from an overdose of right wing propaganda.

I must admit, HPD, it was through HNN, that I learned of and read Wolfe's daughter's memoir (although she claimed it was fiction). She may have been a creative writing major at MU at the time. It was MOST enlightening. Perhaps, by now, it has been published in book form.

We get into disagreements on this board sometimes. But we all shake hands when it is over. In short this board is a little more civillized.

In the almost five years this message board has been running, I have only had to boot a small handful of people for misconduct.

The slant of HNN has been obvious for a long time. I used to enjoy the forums until they went so rediculous so fast. Recently I read it only for entertainment. As far as the Wolfe thing goes, you don't want to get me started.

The frontend of HNN is pretty biased toward the GOP ticket. SOme people call it a republican blog.

There were quite a few democrats on the HNN message board. It is possible that HNN took it down to silence the numerous critics of Wolfe. If they bring it back it will be after the election in my opinion.

Remember that HNN is owned by a member of the Republican Executive committee. Message boards by their nature are pretty darn political. Taking one down during an election is not very smart.

Any time you remove content from an existing website you really hurt your search engine rank.

There has been a lot of digging on Smith St. It appears to be a water or sewer issue. It may just be upgrading the lines, but I don't know why that would entail work on the Sabbath. Anyway, one has to give credit where credit is due. Our mayor was out working with the city workers today (Sun. morning). We would never have seen that with the former mayor or her sidekick, Kreth Sink.
